Senator Likens House to Slavery, Drawing Rebukes From Some

January 17, 2006

Martin Luther King Jr. fought four decades ago to free black Americans from the legacy of slavery. Yesterday, Senator Clinton compared the Republican leadership of the current House of Representatives to the very idea the civil rights leader dedicated his life to fighting.

“When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run - it has been run like a plantation,” she said. “You know what I’m talking about.”

Mrs. Clinton, who was addressing a packed house at the Reverend Al Sharpton’s annual Martin Luther King Day event at Canaan Baptist Church in Harlem, continued: “It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary point of view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard. The Senate’s not that bad, but it’s been difficult. It’s been difficult.”

Later in the afternoon, Mrs. Clinton’s press secretary, Philippe Reines, declined to comment on the senator’s allusion to slavery, but he said she was simply discussing “a top-down system that is fundamentally at odds with how the people’s House should operate.”

Hill’s King Day Shocker

January 17, 2006

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton dropped a Martin Luther King Day stunner yesterday - comparing GOP rule of the House of Representatives to a “plantation.”

Standing alongside the Rev. Al Sharpton, Clinton told a mostly black crowd that “when you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation - and you know what I am talking about.”

The startling comment got muted response from those at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ on W. 116th St., but Republican leaders seized on her remarks as inflammatory and insensitive.

“It is always wrong to play the race card for political gain by using a loaded word like plantation,” said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.). “It is particularly wrong to do so on Martin Luther King Day.”

“I am a little shocked that a United States senator would use such unfortunate stereotyping to characterize an entire political party,” added Rep. Vito Fossella (R-S.I.). “In this case, I think she owes an apology.”

Clinton’s plantation remark was part of a fiery partisan speech in which she predicted that the Bush White House “will go down in history as one of the worst” and chided GOP leaders for squelching debate.

Hillary’s presidential remake leaves the Clinton heartland cold

January 14, 2006

Although it is still more than two years before the main parties in the United States decide on their candidates for the 2008 presidential election, it is widely assumed that the Democratic Party candidate will be the junior senator from New York, Hillary Clinton.

You might expect the political conversation among Democrats to be along the lines of “is Hillary electable” (given the preponderance of red states on the American political map) but as I discovered during a recent visit to the US, many in her natural base have already washed their hands of her.

Hillary not Wild About Harry

January 13, 2006

Sen. Hillary Clinton narrowly avoided political disaster yesterday by staying at least 15 feet away from Harry Belafonte at all times during the Children’s Defense Fund lunch in the Rainbow Room.

That, presumably, was a safe distance.
