Why is it Hillary Clinton’s Turn?

Is it possible for Hillary Clinton to separate herself from her infamous husband and now claim center stage for herself? America was told it was getting “two for the price of one,” when Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1993. If Bill and Hillary were truly co-presidents for eight years, why then, does Hillary even deserve her own personal presidency?

The question is whether anyone knows the real Hillary Rodham Clinton. Is she the feminist who refused to take her husband’s name until it became apparent the down-to-earth folks in Arkansas wouldn’t understand if she didn’t?

In a conversation with Susan McDougal, Hillary related that she once had to show her disappointed parents where Arkansas was on the map. She then bitterly told Susan, “They thought I would end up in Washington, D.C. doing something with my life.” Instead, she was stuck in what she considered to be a backwards hick state - full of chauvinistic, red-necked, uneducated, sod-kickers. There was never any love between Hillary and Arkansas. Hillary had no intention of ever returning to the home of the Razorbacks which is why she headed for suave and sophisticated New York when she decided to run for the Senate.

Hillary was married to the attorney general of Arkansas, Bill Clinton, and Bill’s pay was about $26,000 a year. It was hardly the wealth and fame that Hillary Rodham was seeking. While she worked at the Rose Law Firm, Hillary tried to ignore the rumors of her husband’s womanizing. As Bill walked around without a single dollar on him, allowing his aides to pay the tabs, Hillary had to worry about the bills.

Hillary Rodham was the woman who had been featured in Life magazine as the commencement speaker of Wellesley College. She was a graduate of Yale Law School and a staff member of the House Judiciary Committee that forced a president to resign. Her friends were taking prestigious law clerking jobs in some of the most famous and important law firms all over the country. The woman, who had declared that corporate America’s greed was the cause of all of America’s problems, was now making $24,000 as a token female associate in an Arkansas law firm and was looking for ways to make more money.

When Bill Clinton was elected governor of Arkansas, becoming the First Lady of Arkansas should have raised Hillary’s status considerably. What actually happened was her roving husband had more opportunities for one-night-stands. Hillary had to suffer the embarrassment of watching the new governor, her husband, sneak off from his own inauguration party with an attractive blonde. Many at the party saw the departure and tried to be discrete when they whispered and giggled, but by that time, Hillary had apparently learned how to look the other way in public and just act like none of it ever happened. In short, Hillary had learned early on as Mrs. Bill Clinton, how to lie. She not only lied to herself, but she lied to the public to protect her husband’s political image. This talent would serve her well when she and Bill appeared on “60 Minutes” a few years later and conned Americans into believing that Bill Clinton’s womanizing days were over.

Hillary Clinton ‘takes the gloves off’

You can imagine the MSM’s collective gasp of horror if a Republican presidential candidate ever threatened to punch out opponents. It would be a field day for the psychologists, as one after another would be paraded across TV screens to speculate on the subconscious roots of such aggressiveness, and opine on the fitness for office of anyone harboring such pugilistic predilections. Lefty foreign policy mavens would be invited to fret over the way such knee-jerk hostility might lead us into war, etc.
But NBC raised nary an eyebrow when reporting on Hillary having uttered just such a threat during a campaign stop in Iowa yesterday.

NBC’S Chip Reid introduced the soundbite this way: “She says if she wins the Democratic nomination, she won’t hesitate to go after he Republican opponent.”

Hillary then landed her left cross: “When you are attacked, you have to deck your opponent, and that is what I believe you do.”

It will be interesting to see if the rest of the MSM picks up on Hillary’s steel-cage metaphor.

In race for Iowa, Hillary Clinton is behind

When New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton arrives here for her first presidential campaign events this weekend, she will encounter unfamiliar terrain — a landscape where she is not the perceived front-runner for the Democratic nomination.

Although Clinton appears formidable at the national level, she has not built up a lead in Iowa, home of the first caucuses of the 2008 campaign next January. Most recent polls of Iowa Democrats have shown former senator John Edwards of North Carolina in the lead, with Clinton in a pack that includes Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack.

“This is anyone’s race to win, including obviously Governor Vilsack, who is very familiar with the landscape here,” said newly elected Iowa Gov. Chet Culver (D), who met with Clinton shortly after she arrived Friday afternoon but who is remaining neutral. “That’s the wonderful thing about the caucus process. The winner will have to earn it.”

Liz Taylor gives Hillary Clinton campaign $2,100

Elizabeth Taylor likes the way Hillary Rodham Clinton thinks and that is worth a check for $2,100.While the rest of Hollywood starts to choose sides in the 2008 U.S. presidential race, Taylor has already picked the New York Democratic senator as her favorite candidate and written her a check for the campaign.

In a statement released on Thursday, the actress said, “I have contributed to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign because she has a mind of her own and a very strong one at that.

“I like the way she thinks. She is very savvy and a smart leader with years of experience in government, diplomacy and politics.”

Taylor’s spokesman Dick Guttman said the campaign donation was $2,100, the legal limit an individual can give in a primary campaign. Initially the spokesman had said Taylor gave $100,000, but he said that was an incorrect figure based on misinformation.

Taylor, 74, is one of Hollywood’s leading AIDS activists and supporters of liberal causes.

With the fight for the presidential nominations of both parties just starting, Hollywood — a key center for fund raising and celebrity — is still choosing sides. Some former key supporters of the senator and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are showing interest in Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.

America’s Lady MacBeth -Hillary Clinton’s shameless political reconstructive surgery

 You can measure the scale of an American president’s troubles by the number of skutniks he deploys during his State of the Union address. Every year during his big set-piece speech to Congress, the president will digress from the main thrust of his remarks to offer fulsome praise to some member of the audience in the gallery. This person will have been carefully selected in advance by the president’s speechwriters as an exemplar of some virtue and placed there for the purpose. The television producers will have been alerted in advance so that at the right moment, as the president talks about the heroics of this American Everyman, he or she can rise self-consciously and receive the praise of a grateful nation. This now obligatory part of a constitutional ritual is called a skutnik after the name of the first person so honoured.

One January evening in 1982, Lenny Skutnik, a government employee, dived into the freezing waters of the Potomac River to rescue a victim of a plane crash. Two weeks later, during his second State of the Union address, with the US mired in recession, Ronald Reagan had Mr Skutnik sit in the gallery and paid a moving tribute to his heroics.

This week, for his penultimate State of the Union, Mr Bush had a veritable galaxy of skutniks — soldiers, military people, a firefighter. Whatever you might feel about the wisdom of Mr Bush’s Iraq policy or the feasibility of his plans to wean Americans off petrol, you can’t help but stand and cheer the good works of a decent person.

But there was something unusual about this year’s constellation of ordinary American heroes, beyond the sheer numbers. Usually the skutnik is a presidential privilege. But so intense already is the competition for the 2008 presidential race that others have muscled in.

And so Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton had a skutnik of her own. She arranged for the son of a New York policeman sick with lung cancer to be there. As it happened, the man’s father died that day, and the son’s grief became a sad and very visible coda to the event.

This little incident, the skilfully choreographed exploitation of a human tragedy, the cynically manipulated deployment of public sympathy in service of a personal political end, offered a timely insight into the character of the politician who this week launched the most anticipated presidential election campaign in modern history.

There are many reasons people think Mrs Clinton will not be elected president. She lacks warmth; she is too polarising a figure; the American people don’t want to relive the psychodrama of the eight years of the Clinton presidency.

But they all miss this essential counterpoint. As you consider her career this past 15 years or so in the public spotlight, it is impossible not to be struck, and even impressed, by the sheer ruthless, unapologetic, unshameable way in which she has pursued this ambition, and confirmed that there is literally nothing she will not do, say, think or feel to achieve it. Here, finally, is someone who has taken the black arts of the politician’s trade, the dissembling, the trimming, the pandering, all the way to their logical conclusion.

Fifteen years ago there was once a principled, if somewhat rebarbative and unelectable politician called Hillary Rodham Clinton. A woman who aggressively preached abortion on demand and the right of children to sue their own parents, a committed believer in the power of government who tried to create a healthcare system of such bureaucratic complexity it would have made the Soviets blush; a militant feminist who scorned mothers who take time out from work to rear their children as “women who stay home and bake cookies”.

Today we have a different Hillary Rodham Clinton, all soft focus and expensively coiffed, exuding moderation and tolerance.

To grasp the scale of the transfiguration, it is necessary only to consider the very moment it began. The turning point in her political fortunes was the day her husband soiled his office and a certain blue dress. In that Monica Lewinsky moment, all the public outrage and contempt for the sheer tawdriness of it all was brilliantly rerouted and channelled to the direct benefit of Mrs Clinton, who immediately began a campaign for the Senate.

And so you had this irony, a woman who had carved out for herself a role as an icon of the feminist movement, launching her own political career, riding a wave of public sympathy over the fact that she had been treated horridly by her husband.

After that unsurpassed exercise in cynicism, nothing could be too expedient. Her first Senate campaign was one long exercise in political reconstructive surgery. It went from the cosmetic — the sudden discovery of her Jewish ancestry, useful in New York, especially when you’ve established a reputation as a friend of Palestinians— to the radical: her sudden message of tolerance for people who opposed abortion, gay marriage, gun control and everything else she had stood for.

Once in the Senate she published an absurd autobiography in which every single paragraph had been scrubbed clean of honest reflection to fit the campaign template. As a lawmaker she is remembered mostly, when confronted with a President who enjoyed 75 per cent approval ratings, for her infamous decision to support the Iraq war in October 2002. This one-time anti-war protester recast herself as a latter-day Boadicea, even castigating President Bush for not taking a tough enough line with the Iranians over their nuclear programme.

Now, you might say, hold on. Aren’t all politicians veined with an opportunistic streak? Why is she any different? The difference is that Mrs Clinton has raised that opportunism to an animating philosophy, a P. T. Barnum approach to the political marketplace.

All politicians, sadly, lie. We can often forgive the lies as the necessary price paid to win popularity for a noble cause. But the Clinton candidacy is a Grand Deceit, an entirely artificial construct built around a person who, stripped bare of the cynicism, manipulation and calculation, is nothing more than an enormous, overpowering and rather terrifying ego.
