Bill (& Hillary) Clinton Lulled Us Into War

June 29, 2007

Rudy Giuliani makes it clear that if he and Hillary Clinton are the nominees in 2008, she will have to answer why co-president Bill didn’t treat the 1993 WTC bombing as al-Qaida’s Pearl Harbor.

When Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992, Hillary told an American Bar Association luncheon: “If you vote for my husband, you get me. It’s a two-for-one, blue plate special.” So presumably, if she’s the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee, the opposite will be true: If you vote for Hillary, you get Bill.
One of Hillary’s campaign themes, in addition to the general conduct of the war on terror, will no doubt be a variation of the “Bush lied us into war” theme pushed by her party’s hard-left base and the likes of George Soros and the good folks at MoveOn.org.

First, she’ll have to explain why she was for the war in Iraq before she was against it. She’ll also have to explain what her co-president spouse meant in 1998 when he signed the Iraq Liberation Act. The legislation made the overthrow of the regime of Saddam Hussein the official policy of the United States. Bush just carried it out.

Former New York Mayor Giuliani has made it clear that if he is her opponent in 2008, she’ll also have to explain her husband’s muted — no, nonexistent — response to repeated terrorist attacks on U.S. targets here and abroad, starting with the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

Speaking to about 650 business, corporate and political leaders at Regent University on Tuesday, Giuliani said: “Islamic terrorists killed more than 500 Americans before Sept. 11. Many people think the first attack on America was on Sept. 11, 2001. It was not. It was in 1993.” He went on to say that “bin Laden declared war on us. We didn’t hear it.”

As Giuliani pointed out, the die was cast in February 1993, when Bill Clinton chose to treat that attack as a law enforcement matter. A truck bomb, terrorism’s weapon of choice, made a crater six stories deep under one tower, killing six and injuring a thousand. The terrorist hope was to topple one tower into the other, killing tens of thousands. But President Clinton chose to treat this as a criminal act and not a declaration of war.

Giuliani rightly called that decision “a big mistake” that emboldened terrorists into other attacks such as the bombing of Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, the attacks on our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000.

1993 was also the year of “Black Hawk Down,” when Osama bin Laden watched and drew inspiration for 9/11 as Bill Clinton ordered a shameful withdrawal from Somalia after the bodies of U.S. servicemen were dragged through the streets of Mogadishu.

As bin Laden said in a 1998 interview: “America assumed the titles of world leader and master of the new world order. After a few blows, it forgot all about those titles and rushed out of Somalia in shame and disgrace, dragging the bodies of its soldiers.”

At any time, after the 1993 attack, after Khobar Towers, after the embassy bombings, after the attack on the Cole, Bill Clinton could have used his bully pulpit to identify the gathering threat, respond to these acts of war and inspire all Americans to rally around him. He didn’t. They didn’t.

Inaction also has consequences, and just as World War II really began with Hitler’s unopposed march into the Rhineland, the war on terror, which includes Iraq, really began in the parking garage of the World Trade Center in 1993.

Even if Giuliani isn’t her opponent, the smartest woman on earth should still be made to answer the question of whether 9/11 and the current war in Iraq would have happened had William Jefferson Clinton treated any of the attacks on his watch as the acts of war they were and responded forcefully.
