Hillary Clinton Would Make Good Vice President, Says Obama
August 11, 2007
Offering an olive branch to a rival with whom he had battled for more than a week, Barack Obama said Friday that fellow senator Hillary Rodham Clinton would make a good vice president should he win the Democratic presidential nomination.
"Hillary Clinton is a very capable person and I'm sure she would be on top of, or on the short list of anybody's list for VP - she is on the short list for president, too," he said, drawing laughter and applause at a candidates forum hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists. "I have admiration for Sen. Clinton."
Obama will have to battle Clinton for support among black voters. She is pulling ahead of him in South Carolina, where blacks are expected to make up nearly half of primary voters.
Obama and Clinton have sparred sharply since Clinton characterized Obama as naive for saying during a July 23 debate that he would negotiate with dictators without preconditions to advance peace.
"The people who have been criticizing me over the past two weeks are the people who engineered what is the biggest foreign policy fiasco in a generation," Obama said earlier in the forum, apparently referring to Clinton's 2002 vote to authorize President George W. Bush to send troops to Iraq.
Obama also rejected Clinton's assertion that he was wrong for discussing hypothetical decisions on foreign policy, including his suggestion that he would use military force to pursue Osama bin Laden in Pakistan should intelligence indicate he was hiding on the country's lawless western border.
The bi-racial senator, who arrived several minutes late to the mid-day forum, drew collegial laughter from the audience when he joked that his tardy arrival was a planned response to questions of whether he is "black enough" to win broad support among African-Americans.
Obama, who is vying to become the first non-white president, said his election would change America's racial dynamic by allowing Americans to see a black family in the White House.
Referring to his wife, he said, "You have Michelle as first lady in the White House, and you have [my children] running around on the South Lawn, that changes how America looks at itself."

I feel that Barack Obama should pick Hillary Clinton as his VP because I want the Democrats to be in the White House. I know that these 2 people together have the strongest assets and the most support to win. Between these 2 ppl they have 40 million votes. They would be unbeatable against McCain. I don’t think I could stand 4 more years of Republicans in control of this country. If the Democrats don’t win, I will be very disappointed and discouraged for the future of the USA. I believe Barack has to put aside any blabber by the pundits, especially saying he will be forced to pick her and do the right thing , put asaide ego, and do the right thing, do this for the good of the country, don’t chance allowing another Republican to win. So many people are about to lose their houses and jobs, please do whats right to win.
hillary clinton won the popular vote but people tend to ignore that fact ,especially. the news media who have been very prejudiced against her. it is the popular vote
that will pick the president in november and not the super deligates. barrack obama needs to think very hard before he picks someone else for vice president.
why wound you not pick a vice presidential nominee that comes with over half
of the votes you need to win. pick her and endorse her in eight years. we need to
have 16 years of democratic leadership to undue the damage done by the bush-
cheney administration. please think about that.
Two words: ELECTORAL COLLEGE
