Hillary Clinton ‘can’t wait’ to debate Republicans

November 19, 2007

Acting as if she had already left her Democratic rivals in the dust, Hillary Clinton turned her sights on the Republican presidential candidates this morning during an Iowa campaign event.

“I cannot wait to get on the stage to debate the Republican nominee as we make the case for change, and they argue for the status quo. To them, it’s leave no Bush economic policy behind,” she said at a campaign rally in a school gymnasium in Knoxville, a town located about 50 miles southeast of Des Moines.

Clinton said her husband inherited “a lot of economic problems” but left office with a surplus of more than $5 million. Today, the country faces a deficit of over $9 million, she said.

There’s a pattern, she said. “It takes a Clinton to clean up after a Bush,” she said.

Clinton said President Bush looks out for the wealthiest Americans and lets middle class families fend for themselves.

And the Republican presidential candidates are determined to continue his “failed economic policies,” she said.

“They see $9 trillion in debt and say, ‘Why not trillions more?’ They see tax cuts for wealthy Americans and big corporations and say, ‘Why not some more?’ They see one attempt to privatize Social Security and say, ‘Why not one more?’

“In short, they see eight years of Bush economics – and say, why not eight more?” Clinton said. “Well, here’s my response to that: You’ve got until Jan. 20, and not another day more.”

Clinton, a U.S. senator from New York, said as president her economic policy would create new jobs, restore fairness to the economy, renew the “basic bargain” that hard work is rewarded. She would also “put our fiscal house in order again.”

“I believe that the next president will not have a minute to waste,” she said.

Clinton spoke and answered questions from a crowd of about 400 for about 50 minutes, then was scheduled to take a plane to Waterloo.

With the caucuses right around the corner, the three Democratic front-runners are essentially in a dead heat in Iowa.

In its efforts to fight for the lead, the Clinton campaign has beefed up its staff and advertising in Iowa, and the former first lady intends to see much more of Iowans over the coming weeks.

“President Clinton will be here frequently as well,” Mark Daley, Clinton’s Iowa spokesman, said this morning. “We are running a statewide effort and to that end we will be all over the state.”

But Sen. Clinton won’t be in Iowa for Thanksgiving. She’ll be at home in New York.

“I think we’re going to give you a break for Thanksgiving … so everybody can gather with family,” Clinton told the crowd, adding that she’ll be spending the holiday with her daughter, Chelsea.

Factory worker Herschel Miller of rural Knoxville came to see Clinton speak because he’s still split between the three Democratic front-runners: Clinton, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

“Right now I just feel Hillary has some good experience being in the White House for eight years as first lady,” Miller said.

Pella resident Jaxine Corum said her three children have no health insurance. One is a student studying architecture, one is an illustrator in Portland, and one is a photographer in Pella.

“It’s really important that we get health care for all,” said Corum, who works as an assistant in her daughter’s photo studio.
