Unhinged: Clinton goes after Obama
December 3, 2007
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton broke from her typical campaign themes today and zeroed in on Sen. Barack Obama, one of her chief rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination.
The New York senator, making her fourth appearance in North Iowa in recent months, spoke to a crowd of more than 300 at the Surf Ballroom.
In the past, she has focused her criticism on the Bush administration. Today, she pointedly tried to distance herself from Obama, the Illinois senator who recently moved ahead of her in recent polls in Iowa, while never mentioning him by name.
“How did running for president become a qualification for being president?” she asked.
She said the health care plan of her opponent leaves out 15 million people because he says universal coverage is too hard to achieve.
“I don’t think we should start universal coverage by leaving out 15 million people,” said Clinton.
She also cited seven instances in which her opponent voted “present” on votes in the Illinois Legislature instead of voting “yes” or “no.”
“The president doesn’t have that option,” said Clinton. “We need a president who will take a stand.”
Clinton’s appearance was delayed nearly an hour because of a smoke scare on a twin-engine plane that arrived before hers at Mason City Municipal Airport.
The plane landed on the main airport runway at about 10 a.m. but did not taxi up to the terminal because of a report of smoke in the cabin area.
The 20 passengers, mostly members of the press traveling with Clinton, were evacuated and driven in vans to the terminal. No one was injured.
The plane carrying Clinton circled the airport until the plane on the runway could be moved.
