Now, Chelsea Turns on the tears
February 5, 2008
Sen. Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only Clinton getting emotional on Monday.
“You’re the closest person to my heart,” Chelsea Clinton told her mother as they participated in a voter town hall, “and I’m getting a little emotional.”
Her comments came as Chelsea Clinton introduced a question from an audience member on health care, a topic she said was close to the hearts of her mother and herself.
Such open expression is unusual for the 27-year-old daughter of Hillary and former president Bill Clinton. She rarely speaks in public and generally declines to speak to members of the press.
It came just hours after her mother grew visibly moved, with tears glistening in her eyes, while being given a warm introduction at a campaign appearance at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
The show of emotion was reminiscent of the roundtable discussion Clinton held with voters the day before the New Hampshire primary, when she choked up and got teary. Many observers say the display of feeling helped turn voter support her way in New Hampshire, where she won the presidential nominating primary, after losing in Iowa.
