Clinton Campaign Offends WV Voter, Then Apologizes

May 14, 2008

After a landslide victory in West Virginia on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton’s Campaign is sending its apologies to a resident within the Mountain State.

Julie Corvo of Shepherdstown, WV, was shocked to find an offending message left on her answering machine by someone of the Clinton Campaign.

The volunteer working within the Former First Lady’s party called the Corvo residence to make a pitch on Clinton’s behalf. She mistakenly took the click of the answering machine as a hang-up, and was recorded referring to West Virginian’s as, quote, “poor.”

Other comments made by the volunteer alluded to the assumption that the resident was avoiding calls from a bill collector.

Corvo says the stereotypes made against natives of West Virginia are ridiculous. “I don't think we fit the stereotypes that are perpetrated in this message, and I do not have bill collectors calling me.”

Isaac Baker, a spokesman for Clinton’s Campaign, offered an apology to Corvo through explaining, “You can’t control what everyone says and does…they do things that are really hurtful to others.” Baker went on to say, “…all we can do is apologize and do our best to make sure that that’s not happening with anyone affiliated with the campaign going forward.”
