Hillary Clinton to face tough questioning over husband’s fundraising activities

Hillary Rodham Clinton will face tough grilling about her husband's foreign fund-raising before she becomes secretary of state, the top Republican on the Senate committee that will quiz her said yesterday.

Sen. Richard Lugar said "legitimate questions" will be raised about Bill Clinton's foundation and its secret donors when his wife begins confirmation hearings in January.

Among those believed to have given the foundation tens of millions of dollars are the Saudi royal family, several Arab governments and a Canadian mining magnate whom Bill Clinton accompanied to Kazakhstan on a controversial trip in 2005.

The Clinton Foundation's finances will become a public issue after President-elect Barack Obama officially nominates Sen. Clinton to become the nation's 67th secretary of state today.

The final roadblock to her nomination was removed Saturday, when the Clinton and Obama camps agreed on a wide-ranging ethics deal that will expose many details of the former president's dealings since leaving office.

* In a key provision, Bill Clinton agreed to disclose the names of all 208,000 individuals and organizations that have donated to his foundation since it was created in 1997.

The list will be made public by the end of December, shortly before Congress returns to Washington and begins confirmation hearings for Sen. Clinton and other Obama appointees.

The Clintons steadfastly refused to release the names, even after Obama urged them to during the presidential primaries. Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, at one point called Sen. Clinton "one of the most secretive politicians in America today."

Lugar (R-Ind.) said the Obama-Clinton pact was "a big step" and said he expects he will vote to confirm Clinton when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee holds hearings.

"I suspect, however, that I'm not alone in suggesting there will be questions raised and will probably be legitimate," he said.

Besides Clinton, Obama is expected to announce in Chicago today that he wants Defense Secretary Robert Gates to remain and will nominate Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as homeland-security secretary, Susan Rice as UN ambassador and retired Marine Gen. James Jones as national-security adviser.
