Hillary Clinton walks policy tightrope between past, present

On issues as diverse as global trade and Iraq, Hillary Clinton has steered away from her husband's White House legacy or repositioned herself, prompting claims she lacks core convictions.

But Clinton's backers say her Democratic foe Barack Obama and Republican John McCain have also shifted positions, and maintain she held to much tougher scrutiny by the media.

Judicial Watch has filed a complaint with the FEC over that Elton John/Hillary fundraiser. Not that there’s anyone actually at the FEC who’ll do anything about it, what with the stalemate over FEC nominees rendering the office completely dysfunctional. Oh, well. Here’s the press release:

A Texas oilman who's accused of defrauding the Nigerian government by illegally pumping and exporting 10 million barrels of oil is a major fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
Kase Lawal of Houston is at least the fourth person accused or convicted of criminal wrongdoing to help finance Clinton's political ambitions since 2000 and the second in her quest for the White House. The list also includes Chinese and Pakistani fugitives and a former Miami lawyer, Peter Paul, who was convicted of defrauding Cuba.

Are Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Elton John breaking U.S. laws by allowing the British pop singer, a foreign national, to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign by performing a concert on her behalf?
That's the question Inside the Beltway put to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) yesterday, which does not rule out the possibility.
