Hillary Clinton supporters still trying to derail Obama nomination

August 20, 2008

SCRIPPS HOWARD - A massive e-mail and Internet campaign is under way aimed at derailing the nomination of Barack Obama and making Hillary Clinton the party’s standard bearer next week at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

“It’s downright nasty,” said Memphis, Tenn., superdelegate and city council member Myron Lowery, who has shared dozens of the messages he’s received with The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal newspaper.

Dem Delegates Favor Clinton as VP, but Obama-ites Cool to the Idea

August 19, 2008

CQ POLITICS - Barack Obama is on the cusp of naming his running mate and a lot of the speculation is centering around Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine. At least, those are the three that rated photos in today's Washington Post and New York Times stories.

But if you ask the delegates to the Democratic convention, which a New York Times/CBS News poll did, their runaway favorite is Hillary Clinton. Twenty-eight percent chose Clinton in a survey conducted July 16 - Aug. 17 among a random sample of 970 delegates with Biden getting 6 percent, John Edwards 4 percent (at least, pre-Aug. 8) and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Bayh tied at 4 percent.

Clinton supporters have tried to make this point in recent weeks, winning language in the party’s convention platform that acknowledged Mrs. Clinton’s history-making candidacy, and praising her as a smart, seasoned policy wonk who could add ballast to Mr. Obama’s message of hope and change.

Half of House Dems may vote Hillary at DNC, Says Rep.

August 17, 2008

By Ben Smith

POLITICO - Rep. Loretta Sanchez says she’s happy for the chance to vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Democratic National Convention — and she predicts that as many as half of the Democrats in the House could join her.

Just how many former Clinton supporters will vote for the former first lady during the symbolic first ballot is anybody’s guess, but each of them will be called upon to do so — whether they want to or not.

On Friday, the Obama campaign confirmed that the floor vote in Denver, intended to assuage Clinton supporters still stewing over her narrow loss, will be conducted as a state-by-state roll call. Under proposed convention bylaws, delegates would be forced to register their votes on a tally sheet with the convention secretary — the rules could be altered or suspended before the start of the convention.

August 14, 2008

ABC NEWS - A deal has been brokered between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that will allow Clinton's name to be placed in nomination at next week's Democratic nominating convention, sources close to the Clinton camp told ABC News.

"Both sides agree that it is in the best interest of party unity and making sure that everyone's voice and vote is honored to make sure her name is put into nomination," a person close the negotiations said. "It's to honor everyone who worked so hard on both sides."
